The Platform Save the Tua was founded the 31 May 2013. Its mission is to protect the Tua Valley, a region where flows one of the most beautiful rivers in Portugal, which is shaped by a rare landscape. The Platform Save the Tua is committed in raising public awareness and policy makers awareness about the incompatibility of the Foz Tua dam with the values abided by Unesco World Heritage nomination of the Alto Douro Wine Region. To succeed in this mission, the Plataforma is leading several initiatives, namely legal actions and activities promoting the public opinion conscientiousness to stop the construction of the Foz Tua dam.

02’ The Tua Valley vs. the Foz Tua dam

We demand the construction works to stop immediately, before irreversible damages are committed. Our purpose is the safeguarding and valorisation of this natural heritage of outstanding value on a ecological, social and economic level, part of the our legacy and the Portuguese identity and culture, and an essential tool for the future development of the Tua Valley.

There are some projects that are reasonable, bringing added-value to a country. Others, like the Foz Tua dam are impoverishing it. It is unacceptable to balance over a rare heritage of outstanding beauty and value in exchange of some scarce benefits this project brings. It is our own responsibility to ensure the future generations to have the chance to make the best of the Tua Valley and we must prevent their future from being compromised by irreversible decisions that are taking place.

LET’S SAVE THE TUA!

03’ By several actions being led, the Platform Save the Tua demands:

– To stop immediately the construction works of the Foz Tua dam;

-To revoke the Ordinance n. 251/2012 that provides the subsidies of €300 million to the electric companies to build new dams;

– Reopening of the proceedings for the classification of the Tua Railway Line as National Monument.

To stop the construction of the dam now is, at least, 20 times cheaper than to keep it ongoing and pay subsequently the costs of an expensive electricity from a useless project that affects the public interest.
